What is a product plan?
A product plan is a strategic document that outlines the vision, goals, and roadmap for a product. It details key initiatives, milestones, and timelines to guide the product development process, all while looking really engaging for stakeholders!
If you’ve created a product survey and you're ready to show how you're adapting your product and how long that will take, start with our product plan template.

Why does your company need a product plan?
Gain focus
Did you know that 85% of project managers run multiple projects simultaneously? A product plan helps show at a glance what’s happening with a product development project, meaning things are more likely to stay on track!
Improve structure
Projects are 2.5 times more successful when PM practices are implemented, and a product plan helps gain that structure without the need to build a whole roadmap from scratch.
Stakeholder awareness
While a project report neatly summarises the essence of the project for newcomers, a product plan offers an in-depth but customisable view. You can choose what information is featured before sharing a roadmap specific to each stakeholder.
What elements should a product plan include?
Mission / Scope
- Recap your goals and mission - this reinforces knowledge for those involved and informs those who aren't.
Embedded roadmap
Use the Roadmap Planner macro to embed a live version of your roadmap in Confluence, ensuring real-time visibility for all stakeholders.
- Integrate Jira and Confluence to track your product plan updates in real-time.
Targets and progress
- Graphs, images, or text can group information around your progress and insights.
- Show progress as metrics as well as columns such as 'doing now' and 'future'.
- Add detail on changes in strategy.
Links
- Link to extra material for background information, such as market research, a dev strategy, or a marketing process.
